As the economy has worsened, many business owners have had to make tough choices about how to pay for a variety of employee-related expenses. This has led many businesses to cut back on employee benefits.

This cutback results in employees having to seek out and pay for some benefits that were previously provided by the employer. This can impact dental care, because paying for it out of pocket is prohibitively expensive for many people. A cheap discount dental plan like one offered by DentalPlans.com is a good option for people who have to pay for their own dental care needs.

As more and more people are left holding the benefits bag, they are seeking new and different ways to save on their healthcare and dental benefits. Today’s troubled economy has led companies to reduce benefits and has also led employees to come to terms with the tenuous state of their benefits.

The Employee Benefit Research Institute released some interesting findings about employer benefits. The research showed that in 2007, nearly $8 trillion was spent by employers on worker compensation. Of that amount, more than 18 percent went toward benefits like retirement and health insurance.

The costs that employers pay for benefits depends on the job, but research from Fidelity Investments’ Consulting Services showed that in general employers generally spend between $5,000 and $15,000 annually per worker to provide healthcare and other coverage.

Also interesting is the lack of employee confidence in those benefits continuing for many more years. Fidelity also found in a survey that half of the employees in the U.S. who were surveyed believe that benefits such as retirement funds and health insurance will be dropped completely by employers by 2019. These same people believed that they would be left paying for these benefits on their own.

Whether true or not, it does seem that the benefits offered are changing and that employees are changing their attitudes about saving on health care, because they believe they might have to pay for things themselves.

Because one of the first benefits cut is usually dental coverage, many people have to pay for dental care out of their own pockets. While it can be expensive, it can be made much more cost effective if people take advantage of one of the cheap discount dental plans available. These plans are easy to use because anyone can join as there are no health restrictions, annual limits or hassle with paperwork.

Unlike most dental or health insurance plans, discount dental plans can be purchased by individuals, which gives individuals the same access to affordable care that families and businesses have.
